Second Month in South Africa/2nd Part = LIMESTONE
This moment was very special in my live, because I realised a dream...
I went to climb Sport Routes in Oudtshoorn (LIMESTONE
= STALACTITE).
The Main Crag:
Guide:
This area is very importance to climbers South Africans, because
there are Limestone just in this place in all South Africa, I climbed on
stalactite (Dolomite) in Brazil (7 Lagoas), but here was different, the rock is
Limestone!!!
This trip started when Warren invite me to go
with him and Clifford to climb in this place, I didn’t thought 2 times and
invited my friend Birenim to go together...
After that, we spend 6 hours from Cape Town to
De Hoek Resort near 30Km from Oudtshoorn. We arrived in time to climb on the
afternoon.
Warren and Clifford warm up on Goony Goo-goo:
To warm up, I climbed Goony Goo-goo – 6c, very
nice to learn how you have to climb on this rock, the first impression was very
hard, because all moviments are different, there are a lot of pinchs,
under-cleanys, knee-bars...I don’t use often this moviments when I climb on
granite or sandstone, this difference of style in the world of climb that I
love so much!!!
After warm up, I took a route to battle in
this trip, called “Lost Safari – 7c”, Why this route? Simple, because it’s 35m
with Overhang and STALACTITE since the begin to finish, I had dreaming with
this moment a long time ago and after 7 tries, finally I done it, I spent 25min
to climb, very long fight with my mind, my body and with this beautiful route!
The most beautiful route that I have been climbing:
Overhang:
Birenim climbing:
Finished my project in this trip, I went to
climb on another crag where the most famous route is “Short Circuit – 8a+”. It
is ROOF and STALACTITE = AWESOME!!!
I climbed it falling many times, but I was
very happy, because I done all moviments this route, this was the last day, If
I had more timeeeeeeeeeee...
We go back to the main crag and I tried to
send flash the route “Paws – 7b”, I fought very hard with this route, but I
fell close to the top with the another climbers yelling for me to send it,
thanks all climbers for the all good vibes.
Turtle:
There is close to the camping The Cango Cave,
I went with my friend Birenim, It’s very tourist but is really beautiful the
big caves.
More increadible is to try imagine the first people walking in this
caves with the precarious lights and descovering many paths, some times the
guide switched off the lights and the feeling isn’t confortable!
The game of lights create many ways to
interpret the differents forms of stalactite, I saw a face, a book, a animal
and the most increadible a toilet, hehehehehe...
I saw my friend NAOKI there!!!
The camping where we stayed is very nice, close
to the crags, 2 big swimming pools, many climbers, an atmosphere very friendly,
but I can’t say the same to the sheeps, because It hit me, hehehehe, It was
very funny!!!
Swimming pool:
Slackline:
Sheep of black face...Opsss:
When we were going back to home, the Warren’s
car broke, again the lucky was with me and a friend of Warren helped us. We had
that go back to Oudtshoorn to sleep in a backpacker and in the another day take
a ride to go back home...
S.O.S:
I like this epics trip with Warren, hehehehehe...
thanks so much guys, AMAZING TRIP!!!

My Second Month in Cape Town 1st Part
My second month in Cape Town started very well, because I went to a new area to climb boulder. This area is at Topside and the most famous boulder is “Sex Traverse – 6C+”, which is very long, and to do it, the climber needs to have a good relationship with this line, where the last movements are very difficult, the grade 6C+ for me, doesn’t correspond with all energy necessary to climb this line, However is a beautiful boulder, but I didn’t send it, because I don’t like the long relationships, hehehehe...
Ryan on the half of "Sex Traverse - 6C+? and Lara Warming up":
After tried "sex traverse", Ryan and I opened another line in another boulder, where the climber should use just their feet-no hands. For me, this part of the day was very cool, when other climbers were climbing together.
Gareth and Paul Trying "Just their feet-no hands":
Thanks Ryan for picking me up and Paul for dropping me at my house!
In the first 2 weeks of December, my most fanatic friend, Rachel, went to Bishop in USA to climb boulder and to visit her parents. I thought it whould be easy to find a climber in Topside. So, I took the train, and after an hour, I arrived at Muizenberg Station, close to the very good crag, called “The Hole”, However I didn’t find anyone. Thus, I started my long walk from The Hole to Kalk Bay.
I was there:
I think that I walked for 8 hours, but I stopped many times to enjoy the beautiful view, to climb boulder and to do a slackline. To finish this day, when I went to take the train I didn’t need to pay, I don’t know what happened, but I liked, free is always good, hehehehehe...
Climbing boulder:
SlackLine:
In the next day, I went again at The Hole, but now with my friend rock climber Warren. He always invite me for good trips. We climbed all the morning, for me was awesome to climb on the big roof.
Big Roof:
After that, in the afternoon, we went to open a waterline in Kalk Bay Harbour. When we were starting to arm, the security of Kalk Bay Harbour wouldn’t want to let us to do the waterline, but while we were explaining, we finished to arm.
Waterline Kalk Bay Harbour - 30m:
When we starting to walk on the line, we situation with the security were better, and during 3 hours, we walking on the waterline. However, when we were picking up the equipments, I didn’t see our backpacks and I ran to explain to the security what happened, after that they called to the police.
The best seafood:
In this moment, I was preocupate, but I was feeling something that in the end of the afternoon, we would go to get back our backpacks. While our backpacks were disappeared with many things very importants for Warren and me, such as: my passaport, keys of my house and the Warrens’s car, telephones and some money, good people helped us, as Sammy and George, managers from the Restaurant of SeaFood “Kalky’s”, them gave to us T-Shirts and a free food in the Restaurant.
Backpacks found:
When our were enjoying the best seafood that I have been eating in all my live, the police found the robber with our backpacks, just the telephone of Warren wasn’t found. In this day, I had a lot of lucky. Hour to go back to home and Warren took the Chapman’s Peak route, this way was amazing, manly, when he showed me the HighLine of Chapman’s Peak, awesome. Thank you so much Warren, for this busy day, hehehehe!!!
Chapman's Peak:
Every Friday my friend Birenim cook a cake to celebrate the end of one more good week with good people studying English, Thanks Birenim to share all this good feeling in form of cake.
CaKe:
Saturday, 10 December 2011 happened the competition “Rock Masters”, in the climbing gym “City Rock”, which some best climbers in South Africa were selected. My friend Rachel came back to Cape Town and of course, her name was on the list of selected climbers to participate. But unfortunately, she injuried her unkle in the competition. Thus, she didn’t finish her participation, and as well, didn’t can go with Simon and I to climb boulder at Llandudno.
Rock Masters - South Africa:
The climbing at Llandudno with Simon and CB (Rachel’s dog) was amazing, we enjoyed the afternoon climbing many boulders. Thanks Simon, because you had patience with me when I was battling to send the boulder “Baby Shark deep start – 7B”, beautiful boulder!!!
Simon climbing on a hard slab:
Sunday dawned raining, but even so, I went with Geoffrey, Marthinus and Henrik to climb at Paarl. I was very excited, because I would go to climb in a new area, where the rock is granite and in this place have boulders, sport climb and multi pitch sport climb. Just when we arrived on the parking, the rain stopped.
Paarl:
So, we starting to climb boulders while the routes were drying. the quantity of boulders is incredible, I climbed on many blocks and I opened 2 new boulders (“Very Almost – 6C+ - FA” and “White men can’t jump – 6C+ - FA”).
Geoffrey on the "Very Almost - 6C+":
Henrik Warming up:
Marthinus on the "Super Very Almost - project":
In the afternoon, we went to climb “Sands of Time – 18 – 120m” my first Multi Pitch Sport Climb in South Africa. The first pitch was very easy on the slab, the second was awesome, because the route is very vertical with good jugs, the third was a traverse with good jugs and slopers, the last pitch was a climbing on the hard slab, and to finish, I wrote my impressions about this climbing on the book that was on the top of mountain. Thanks guys for this amazing day on the rocks.

My First Month in Cape Town
In my first month in Cape Town, many things happend, now I can explain better about my life here.
I arrived alone in Cape Town, just booked my school and my room in a big orange house. For me, staying alone was the best choice that I made, because for everything, you have to use your English. Some people in Brazil told me that there were many brazilians and it would be bad for me to learn English. However, this isn’t true, I haven’t seen any Brazilians and for me this is the better city for a rock climber to learn English.
I don't know what side to look (trip to Montagu):
I think the luck to be with me, because I have always met good people in this place and these people have always help me in this trip, such as:
- my teacher (Ann);
- my best rock climbing friend (Rachel):
- my classmate (Birenim):
My life here is to study English, to rock climb and to cook. This is a dream!!!
I’m very happy about my school, because feel this course is improving my English. The difference between my first week and my first month is very large. Moreover, in this school there was a good braai, where I prepared my first “Vinagrete” and “brigadeiro”, typical food from Brazil.
I have just some words to write about the rocks, I rock climb a lot...Since I arrived in South Africa I have been rock climbing a lot with good people, good vibe and beautiful places, consequently, I rediscovered my passion for climbing. Here my thought is enjoy the maximum these days on the rocks, for me, doesn’t matter the difficulty, the rock or the place, if I can put my hands on the rocks and climb, it is good!
Many many...rocks!!!
I have visited many places to rock climb, and some things have made an impression on me, such as:
- the sunset at Llandudno is very intense, simply perfect;
Ryan climbing in Sunset:
Lara
- the seals I saw for the first time live;
- the wood trails and the many boulders in Topside/Echo Valley;
- the trip to Montagu where I spot climbed, I have just one word to describe this place, Awesome;
Warren and Paul searching for a sector:
Daze of Thunder Wall:
The Scoop:
- my last climb in November was in Silvermine, Thank you Simon, beautiful vertical routes.
To finish my first month in Cape Town, my friend Birenim and I visited Simon’s Town to see the penguins, after that, we went to eat at Kalky’s , this restaurant has the best seafood I have eaten in all my life, delicious. Also, in front of this place, I saw many seals under water, very nice!!!
The Penguin:
Good VIBES and Good CLIMB a lot!!!
